Strong & Sustainable-A Balanced Approach to the Hips

In this workshop for teachers and students, Caitlin invites you to consider some of the imbalances in your asana practice and to rethink these approaches for optimal sustainability. We’ll look at some ways in which we may be over-stretching and under-strengthening certain parts of the hip, as well as bring attention to some of the hip muscles that are often overlooked. For example, in vinyasa yoga, we often stretch the hamstrings a great deal but overlook opportunities to strengthen the hamstrings. We’ll also consider ways to thoughtfully address the needs of the typical modern body. After some didactics and discussion, you’ll implement this knowledge in a full practice to embody what you’ve learned. This workshop is ideal for practitioners who value a strong practice that is sustainable over time, and teachers looking to sequence from a skillful and updated framework.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Be introduced to the five muscle groups of the hip and consider which groups are often under-utilized or over-stretched, in the context of vinyasa yoga and the modern body
  • Consider ways to update our approach to the hip joint and sequence for balanced range of motion in the hip
  • Implement this knowledge in a balanced practice, working towards postures that are more demanding for the hip joint, such as lotus and dragonfly
